When people ask why I've become increasingly interested in sustainability, innovation and long-term outcomes, my thoughts often return to a disaster relief programme I worked on in Zimbabwe in 2011.
At the time, I was working with humanitarian organisation Medair on a water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) programme focused on improving access to safe water for vulnerable communities following a cholera outbreak. My role involved managing a rural water infrastructure and hygiene promotion programme in Gokwe North District.
Our team constructed hand-dug wells using an innovative self-sinking telescopic well design. The concept was not about sophisticated technology or expensive equipment. In fact, the local sandy river sediments helped the well sink naturally as excavation progressed from within.
The real innovation was developing a solution that could be delivered using locally available materials, local labour and simple construction techniques, without the need for excavation machinery. The aim was to create a low-cost, practical and repeatable approach that communities could ultimately adopt and sustain themselves.
The engineering was fascinating and the construction challenges were significant. The most important thing were always the people and communities we were there to serve. Everything else else existed to support that objective.
Beyond the communities themselves, sustainability became the next most important consideration as providing access to clean water on the day a well is completed is one thing but ensuring that clean water remains available months and years later is something entirely different.
Looking back, I don't think Zimbabwe taught me sustainability, rather it confirmed something I had already observed throughout my engineering career. Infrastructure succeeds when people, ownership, knowledge and engineering come together. Zimbabwe simply provided one of the clearest examples I've ever seen.
Alongside the well construction programme, we delivered train-the-trainer initiatives that ultimately helped around 20 000 people learn water hygiene practices. Local water clubs were also established to help communities take ownership of operating and maintaining the infrastructure long after construction was complete.
The more I reflect on the project, the more I realise that the training programme may have been every bit as important as the physical infrastructure itself. The wells provided access to water. The train-the-trainer programme created knowledge. The water clubs created ownership. The use of local materials, local labour and repeatable construction methods helped ensure the solution could continue long after the project had ended. Together, these elements created a system capable of delivering benefits long after external support had moved on. In many ways, that is the essence of sustainability. Not the infrastructure, technology or even the project itself but the outcomes that endure.
Today, in the UK, sustainability is often discussed through the lens of carbon reduction, net-zero commitments, biodiversity and environmental performance. These are all critical challenges but my experience reinforced a belief that sustainability is fundamentally contextual.
Infrastructure alone rarely solves a problem. The most successful projects combine engineering, planning and delivery with education, operation, governance and community ownership. Remove any one of those elemets and the long-term outcome becomes less certain.
Fifteen years later, I believe the construction industry faces a similar challenge. Too often, sustainability is viewed as a separate discipline rather than an integrated solution.
Whether we're delivering housing, utilities, infrastructure or regenerative projects, long-term success depends on how effectively we connect people, processes, assets and objectives from the outset. The projects that create the greatest value are rarely those with the most impressive individual components.
They are the ones that continue delivering benefits years after project teams have left site.
